Wageningen University and Research Center (www.wur.nl/UK)
Wageningen University was founded in 1918. In recent decades it has evolved into one of the world's leading education and research centres in the plant, animal, environmental, agrotechnological, food and social sciences. The way food is grown has undergone rapid change in the last few decades. All over the world, agriculture is becoming more and more market driven, while pressures on the environment are increasing. For many years, Wageningen scientists have been aware of the ultimate importance of maintaining a habitable planet earth, as well as ensuring reliable supplies of safe, high quality food, while maintaining the biodiversity of natural habitats and conserving natural resources. Wageningen University has therefore formulated its mission accordingly: "Wageningen University wishes to develop and disseminate the scientific knowledge needed to sustainably supply society's demand for sufficient, healthy food and a good environment for humans, animals and plants". The Environmental Economics and Natural Resources Group focuses on the economic analysis of national and international environmental and natural resources problems, with the aim of improving understanding of these problems and of identifying possible solutions, including policy recommendations.

    Humboldt University Berlin (www.hu-berlin.de/indexe.html)
Humboldt University of Berlin was founded in 1810. The foundation concept of Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) was a unity of teaching and research and an all-round humanist education of students. This ideal of Humboldt has become a model for universities all over the world. The outstanding academic achievements and international attractiveness during the first decades of the 20th century reflected by 29 Nobel Prizes were disrupted by the Nazi regime during the period from 1933 to 1945 and the following division of Germany and Berlin. Since the German reunification in 1990, Humboldt University seized successfully the opportunity to build upon its foundation principles enhancing excellence and international attractiveness in both teaching and research. Today, Humboldt University is again among the leading universities in Germany and worldwide.
Since its foundation, agricultural science has been an integrative part of the university. The Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture was re-established in 1992 and quickly regained high academic reputation. The chair of resource economics focuses its research and teaching activities particularly on "institutions of sustainability". This key notion comprises a multitude of institutional questions ranging from local participation to international agreements and conventions. The interrelations between institutions and sustainable use of resources are also reflected by the chair's course programme comprising 'Environmental and Resource Economics' and 'New Institutional and Political Economy'. The chair widely collaborates with leading scientific institutions throughout the world.
